Winter in Indiana can bring heavy snow, freezing rain, ice storms and strong winds. These conditions can create electrical hazards and cause extended power outages, warns John Cassady, CEO of Indiana Electric Cooperatives.
“During winter, snow and ice accumulation on power lines may cause them to snap or lead to poles breaking,” said Cassady. “People need to be especially mindful of the dangers of live power lines.”
If the power goes out
If a winter storm leaves your home without power, conserve heat by keeping doors to unused rooms closed and limiting trips outside.
It is also important to have storm kits ready at home and in your vehicle. A home kit should include at least two weeks of supplies such as bottled water, nonperishable food, emergency blankets, first aid items, flashlights, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra batteries and toiletries.
A vehicle kit should contain at least three days of essentials, including blankets, warm clothing, jumper cables, bottled water, nonperishable food, sand or cat litter for traction and phone chargers.
