Use caution with electric heating devices this winter

Electric space heaters and blankets are great ways to stay warm when the temperature drops. While these devices provide comfort, it’s important to keep safety in mind when the temperatures drop.

During these winter months, when space heaters and electric blankets are used more frequently, home fires increase.

Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the United States. More than 65,000 home fires are attributed to heating equipment each year. These fires result in hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, and millions in property damage.

Indiana’s electric cooperatives encourage residents to use space heaters only as supplemental heat sources. Many homeowners may use this option to heat specific rooms while they sleep, but this is unsafe. Consumers are encouraged to turn off space heaters when leaving a room or going to sleep. If it is left unattended, it could overheat or fall. Space heaters should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord, as this can create a hazardous situation.

Electric blankets and heating pads are also popular during the cold months. Electric blankets should not be folded during use and should not be used while sleeping. Inspect them for dark, charred, or frayed spots, and check whether the electric cord is cracked or frayed. Consumers are encouraged to review the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels before use.

While there is no risk for carbon monoxide poisoning with an electric space heater, it holds many other safety hazards if not used properly. Safety experts recommend installing smoke alarms on every level of the home. Be sure to check these smoke alarms regularly to make sure they are working properly.

When using an electric space heater, electric blanket, or heating pad to stay warm, be sure to remain mindful of safety. Following these tips can help reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, promoting a safe home environment.
